Exploring Purpose and Practice:
My Takeaways from the MSW Information Session
I recently attended a virtual Career Resources and Network event hosted by Kennesaw State University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program. The session was led by Dr. Monica Nandan, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Social Impact at KSU’s Wellstar College of Health and Human Services. Her presentation was direct, informative, and focused on what prospective students need to know to prepare for the program.
Dr. Nandan walked us through the MSW program’s website, highlighting key sections like admission requirements, program tracks, and field education opportunities. She explained the credit breakdown for both the Traditional (60 credit hours) and Advanced Standing (36 credit hours) tracks, and clarified what academic background is needed to apply, including the importance of a liberal arts foundation and a minimum GPA of 3.0 over the last 60 undergraduate hours.
These are just some snapshots I took during the meeting that had key information:
She also emphasized the value of experiential learning, especially through clinical field practicums that connect classroom knowledge with real-world practice. The program’s Field Director plays a key role in helping students find placements that match their interests and build professional confidence.
What I appreciated most was the practical tone of the session. It wasn’t just about selling the program, it was about helping us understand what preparation looks like, what materials we’ll need, and how to align our goals with the program’s structure. The advising team encouraged us to book one-on-one appointments to talk through our paths, which felt like a genuine invitation to engage.
